The carcass of a male elephant was discovered by the side of the Tangalle Wellawaya main Road in close proximity to the Magam Ruhunupura International Convention Centre in Hambanthota on Sunday (22) morning.
According to villagers the animal which was said to be around 35 years of age had been known to roam the area regularly. When the carcass was discovered an injury similary to a gunshot injury was visible on it’s forehead and a trail of blood was also seen. The animal had brought down two electricity posts when it collapsed.
On being asked by journalists whether the injury was possibly due to a gunshot the two wildlife rangers who were present at the spot had tried to coverup by threatening the journalists and insisting that the elephant had died after being electrocuted.
If held, a postmortem would reveal if the elephant had been shot before being electrocuted.
